Transformative Educational Empowerment in the Kangemi Informal Settlements in Nairobi

In the heart of the Kangemi informal settlements in Nairobi, the pursuit of knowledge meets the challenges of humble neighborhoods. Recognizing the pivotal role of education in community development, Strathmore University Business School embarked on a transformative initiative, a Customised Programme focused empowering 50 school directors of Alternative Provision of Basic Education and Training (APBET).

Divided into two modules, this Programme aimed to instill essential skills and strategies in the school directors, offering them a holistic toolkit to elevate the educational landscape of their institutions.

The first module, conducted at the SBS premises, was dedicated to strategic empowerment. School directors engaged in comprehensive sessions on Strategic planning, equipping them with the tools to chart a clear and effective course for their institutions. The directors then delved into the intricacies of attracting students to their school gaining insights into enrollment strategies that go beyond numbers to focus on fostering a conducive learning environment. Some of the other topical areas they covered during this module were bookkeeping, stakeholder management and financial management.

The second and last module took place at the Kangemi Resource Center, where the Programme focus shifted to creating a conducive learning environment. The participants delved deeper into the different strategies they can employ to enhance the overall teacher experience, acknowledging the pivotal role teachers play in shaping the educational journey. This module emphasized the importance of holistic educational spaces that foster a positive atmosphere for both educators and students alike.

The Programme culminated in a graduation ceremony which took place on 21^st November 2023 at the SBS Campus where the directors celebrated this great achievement. As the programme concluded, it marked not just the end of a training initiative but the beginning of a journey towards educational excellence. The impact of this initiative goes beyond the 50 school directors, extending to the students, teachers, and the community at large.
