Last week’s curriculum development workshop, from 16th to 18th April 2024 at the Merica Hotel in Nakuru was more than just a gathering of minds—it was a dynamic convergence of expertise, passion, and purpose aimed at transforming Kenya’s healthcare leadership landscape. Led by the Institute of Healthcare Management’s visionary Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro and the dynamic Dr. Jackline Aridi, this initiative unfolded against the backdrop of the ‘Uongozi wa Afya Mashinani’ project, a vital component of the expansive Global Health Workforce Programme (GHWP) funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

The GHWP’s mission is nothing short of transformative: to empower health workforces across Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria, arming them with the tools to fortify health systems post-pandemic and advance towards universal health coverage. Within this grand vision, the ‘Uongozi wa Afya Mashinani’ initiative shines as Kenya’s beacon of progress, targeting the enhancement of Primary Healthcare Services through the empowerment of local health leadership.

Implemented collaboratively by Intrahealth International – Kenya, Primary Care International (UK), and Strathmore Business School, the project’s recent curriculum workshop was a testament to interdisciplinary cooperation. Here, subject matter experts from diverse backgrounds, both public and private sector, meticulously crafted training modules focused on Leadership, Management, and Governance tailored for Primary Healthcare In-charges spanning ten counties.

The essence of the workshop extended beyond academic discourse—it was a call to action. Participants delved deep into the nuances of setting up and managing Public Healthcare Networks, leveraging the innovative Hub & Spoke Model to enhance service delivery efficiency and resilience. Crucially, the curriculum was imbued with a commitment to Gender and Social Inclusion, recognizing the imperative of equitable healthcare access and representation.

For Strathmore Business School, this collaboration signifies more than academic engagement; it’s a manifesto of sustainability and social responsibility. Anchored in the theme of ‘Caring for People and Planet’, these concerted efforts champion a holistic approach to healthcare leadership, enriching not only the skills of individuals but the fabric of communities.

As the workshop concluded amidst spirited discussions and shared aspirations, Nakuru bore witness to the dawn of a new era in healthcare leadership—one characterized by collaboration, innovation, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of all. The journey ahead is rich with promise, echoing the harmonious chords struck by diverse stakeholders united in pursuit of a healthier, more equitable tomorrow.
