Between 5th and 30th June 2023, the Sisters’ Blended Value Project (SBVP) in partnership with the Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa (ACWECA) recruited and trained a total of 79 Catholic Sisters in the first capacity development program of 2023 titled “Leading and Managing Sustainable Social Enterprises Program”. The sisters were drawn from various congregations across Zambia, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Facilitated by seasoned local faculty and coaches, the program targets senior leaders of the congregations including mother superiors, superior generals, and regional, provincial, and delegate superiors.

The program is the first of three levels that will be run in 2023 under the capacity development pillar.

The program, which incorporates individual and group coaching sessions aims at empowering the participants to recognize the role and value of social enterprises to their congregations and map and maximize the resources available to their congregations towards generating a surplus for their social enterprises while helping them become more effective in developing their teams, maximizing performance, building resilience, and ensuring that their social enterprises are sustainable.

As part of their experiential learning, the sisters visited various local social enterprises including Bree’s Bees Ltd in Kenya, Kasisi Organic Agricultural Farm in Zambia, Sisters of Immaculate Heart of Mary Reparatrix Projects in Uganda, and the Center of Community Initiatives in Tanzania where they had the opportunity to apply in-class learning, interact with the management teams, toward gaining an understanding of the best practices that they can apply in their own enterprises within their congregations.

By the end of the programme, the sisters were able to develop practical insights into developing and creating meaningful asset management strategies to align with their congregation’s objectives.

Further, an additional 22 sisters participated in the first module of the Executive Coaching for Managers (ECM) Program between the 19th -23rd of June 2023. The program was aimed at developing the coaching skills of the sisters who were coached in preparation for them to be coaches. The program also helped them articulate and share their experiences, perceptions, and thoughts, and to explore diverging perspectives to build confidence and expertise as a coach. At the end of the program, sisters were furnished with skills to coach fellow sisters within their congregations and social enterprises.

Level 2, Managing Social Enterprise Program which will focus on those in middle-level management, and Level 3, Foundations of Social Entrepreneurship Management whose focus will be the Project administrators/managers and project implementers in the respective congregations, are scheduled to run in July and August 2023 respectively.
