Strathmore University’s Team Kivu Sokoni topped the Nairobi Hult Prize Regional Impact Summit hosted virtually by Strathmore University Business School. Team Kivu Sokoni emerged the winner after competing with 40 other teams from all over the world. Before competing at the Nairobi Hult Prize Regional Impact Summit, team Kivu Sokoni had been crowned champions at the Strathmore OnCampus Hult Prize Challenge in late 2020.
Kivu Sokoni is a team comprising three international students from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC); Destin Kakira, a Strathmore alumnus with a Masters degree in Telecommunications Engineering and serves as the Chief Executive Officer, Ghislain Bwinja Mastaki, a Bachelor of Commerce student at Strathmore University Business School is the Chief Financial Officer and David Ikundji, a Network Engineering student at DePaul University in Chicago who serves as the Chief Technology Officer.
Kivu Sokoni is a semi-online marketplace that connects local farmers, suppliers, and manufacturers to consumers in Bukavu, South Kivu province in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Kivu Sokoni aims to uplift the agricultural sector in DRC by putting in place integrated logistical and technological solutions that will improve farmers’ capacity and access to reliable markets, while providing affordable and quality products to consumers. Kivu Sokoni’s customers are households, hotels & restaurants, and organizations.
Organized in partnership with the United Nations (UN), the Hult Prize Challenge, which was founded in 2010, is the world’s largest social impact competition. Every year, students from across the world compete to solve a pressing social problem in food security, water access, energy, and education by developing a scalable and sustainable social enterprise. Finalists pitch to a panel of judges, captains of industry, and thought leaders for a chance to win $1 million in seed capital. The theme for the period 2020-2021 is “FOOD FOR GOOD.” The big question that students have to answer is: how can you transform food into a vehicle for change that will create jobs, stimulate economies, reimagine supply chains and improve outcomes for 10,000,000 people by 2030.
At Strathmore University Business School, we endeavor to develop our students holistically by focusing not only on academic development but also on personal development, talent development, and entrepreneurship development.
