Between 2nd and 5th April 2024, we welcomed the 2024 class of the Women Directors Leadership Programme, for their first module at the Strathmore University Business School Nairobi Campus.

This module saw participants embarking on a week-long journey delving into critical topics pivotal for effective board leadership. From fundamental board principles to navigating gender-related dynamics, participants engaged in discussions covering board etiquette, board structure, the distinction between board and management roles, and the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations into board governance, among other pertinent subjects.

Following the intensive week in Nairobi, participants are set to continue their learning journey with a second module at the prestigious Cranfield School of Management in London, followed by a final module in the picturesque setting of Amboseli.

Post the class sessions, the module culminated in a dinner which brought together this year’s participants as well as alumnae of the Programme from 2018 to date.

Dr. Caesar Mwangi, Executive Dean, Strathmore University Business School, centered his welcome remarks on three key attributes: Competence, Character, and Courage. Dr. Mwangi encouraged the women leaders not only to showcase their competence but also to uphold strong character in all endeavors, while consistently demonstrating the courage to pursue their aspirations.

Adding to the Programme’s richness, Mercy Wanjau, Secretary to the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya and an alumna of the Women Directors Leadership Programme, shared her personal journey and reflections from the program. Highlighting the invaluable takeaways of networks and partnerships forged through the program, Wanjau underscored the Programme’s role in empowering women leaders and enhancing their professional growth and impact.

The Women Directors Leadership Programme (WDLP) is an incisive Programme that aims at moving the focus from why women should be on boards and C-Suite positions to how they should perform for both board and leadership excellence. WDLP is a testament to Strathmore University Business School’s commitment to fostering inclusive leadership and advancing gender diversity in corporate boardrooms. As women leaders continue to ascend to leadership roles, Programmes like these play a pivotal role in equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and networks necessary to drive meaningful change in their organizations and communities.
