Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro is currently a Professor of Health Systems Research and Director, Institute of Healthcare Management at Strathmore University Business School.
He is also a Professor of Pharmaceutics (since 2000) at the University of Nairobi, a Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (FKNAS) and the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS).
Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro holds a PhD in Pharmacokinetics from the University of Liverpool, UK and a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc in Pharmaceutics from the University of Nairobi.
He has over 100 publications and abstracts in international peer-reviewed journals in the broad areas of clinical pharmacology, drug quality and policy.
At the national level, Professor Kokwaro is the Chair of the Expert Committee on Clinical Trials (ECCT) which is based at the Ministry of Health. It is the final committee that reviews all applications for clinical trials in Kenya, before granting approval. He is an expert on malaria chemotherapy and was a member of the first Expert Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) for the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)from 1998-2002. He supervised several Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral students, and examined several PhD Theses in Europe, Africa and India.
