Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro

Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro  is currently a Professor of Health Systems Research and Director, Institute of Healthcare Management at Strathmore University Business School.

He is also a Professor of Pharmaceutics (since 2000) at the University of Nairobi,  a Fellow of the Kenya National Academy of Sciences (FKNAS) and the African Academy of Sciences (FAAS).

Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro holds a PhD in Pharmacokinetics from the University of Liverpool, UK and a Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc in Pharmaceutics from the University of Nairobi.

He has over 100 publications and abstracts in international peer-reviewed journals in the broad areas of clinical pharmacology, drug quality and policy.

At the national level, Professor Kokwaro is the Chair of the Expert Committee on Clinical Trials (ECCT) which is based at the Ministry of Health. It is the final committee that reviews all applications for clinical trials in Kenya, before granting approval. He is an expert on malaria chemotherapy and was a member of the first Expert Scientific Advisory Committee (ESAC) for the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)from 1998-2002. He supervised several Masters, PhD and Postdoctoral students, and examined several PhD Theses in Europe, Africa and India.

He has been a member of a Technical Advisory Committee for GSK on antimalarial drug resistance, and a member of the editorial board of Malaria Journal (2009-2012). He is also interested in research on improvement of standards of care for HIV/AIDS patients.

Over the years, Prof. Kokwaro has taught concepts of Drug Supply Management to over 200 healthcare managers from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Sudan, Malawi, Namibia, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

He was the lead editor of the first comprehensive treatment formulary for HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB in Eastern and Central Africa Countries [ Ref: Kokwaro G, Kirika R, Thuo M and Wangai M (Editors) 2006. Model Formulary for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria for East, Central and Southern African (ECSA) Countries”;]. Qualifications

PhD in Pharmacokinetics from University of Liverpool, UK.

Bachelor of Pharmacy and an MSc in Pharmaceutics from University of Nairobi.

He has been a reviewer for several international journals including: Clinical Infectious Diseases; British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology; Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene; East African Medical Journal; and Malaria Journal.
