Professor Harvi Millar
Adjunct Faculty

Prof. Harvi Millar is a distinguished scholar, educator, and consultant with a multifaceted career spanning industrial engineering, operations management, and sustainable business practices. A Saint Lucian-Canadian national with Barbadian heritage, he brings a unique global perspective to his work at the intersection of academia, industry, and community development.

He holds a PhD in Industrial Engineering (Operations Management & Statistics), Technical University of Nova Scotia (1990), a Master of Applied Science in Industrial Engineering, Technical University of Nova Scotia (1984) and  a BSc (Hons) in Industrial Engineering, University of the West Indies (Inaugural cohort, St. Augustine Campus)

He is a full professor at Sobey School of Business, Saint Mary’s University (Canada) since 2002, and a tenured faculty member since 1994, teaching operations management, business statistics, and supply chain management. In 2016, Prof. Millar was appointed to the Strategy and Planning Committee of the University of the West Indies Board (2016)

Professor Millar’s research addresses pressing challenges in:

  • Sustainable Manufacturing & Supply Chains: Strategies for Caribbean and global industries
  • Industrial Operations: Employee scheduling, self-checkout systems, and affordable housing in developing economies
  • Social Equity: Studies on HIV/AIDS awareness in Black communities, African Nova Scotian education experiences, and COVID-19’s impact on Black businesses

His work has been presented at 40+ international conferences across five continents and published in leading academic journals.

As President of Management Technologies NS, he leverages data-driven approaches to organizational development, including:

  • Policy Frameworks: Advised governments on education reform (Saint Lucia), ICT policies, and Caribbean manufacturing competitiveness
  • Community Empowerment: Landmark studies on African Nova Scotian education outcomes and employment equity in Canada
  • Corporate Strategy: Expert in total quality management and productivity optimization for businesses

Public Intellectual & Arts Advocate

  • Columnist: Authored 60+ articles on business, culture, and education for publications like the Chronicle Herald (Nova Scotia) and CARICAD Newsletter
  • Award-Winning Musician: Six-time music award winner, including East Coast Music Awards (2002, 2003) and African Nova Scotian Music Awards
  • Community Leadership: Co-Chair of the Africentric Learning Institute (ALI) and founding member of the African Canadian Education Project

Guided by the African proverb “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion,” Professor Millar champions collaboration, equity, and interdisciplinary innovation. His work—bridging engineering rigor, social justice, and artistic expression—reflects a commitment to holistic problem-solving.
