“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.”- Michele Jennae

Networking means different things to different people. Many people will use networking only when they need help with something while in essence, networking should be something that we do consistently.

Networking is more than just meeting people and connecting, it is about creating intentional relationships for both your personal and professional life. However, networking only works if after the relationships are built, there is a continued interaction/relationship.

The most successful people build long-lasting relationships throughout their careers, and often those with broader networks and easier access to those networks are more successful still.

Professionally, networking is essential for your career development as it will help you develop and improve your skill set, stay on top of the latest trends in your industry, keep a pulse on the job market, meet prospective mentors, partners, and clients, and gain access to the necessary resources that will foster your career development.

Networking clearly plays an important role in our lives and thus it is important that we refine our skills just like we would our academic and professional skills. Here are some networking tips that can help you master the art of networking:

  • Be relaxed. People are different and you will find that some may be anxious and under pressure when networking. When networking, it is important that you are relaxed and comfortable. This helps in ensuring that you bring your best self forward.
  • Start where you are. Many at times, people say that they do not know where to get networking opportunities. Here is the best part! You can begin where you are; start by networking with your current contacts first.
  • Stay in touch. Good networking involves building relationships which you will not be able to do if all your interactions with people are transactional. In order words, do not only reach out to people when you need something from them.
  • Help others. Networking is a give and take relationship. When you ask people for help, try to help them in return. Additionally, pay it forward by helping people who haven’t helped you yet.
  • Be fully present during your interactions. Always be fully present when you engage with people. No matter which side of the table you are on, actively listen to what the other person is saying and ensure you contribute to the conversation. Find out how you can be helpful to them versus simply waiting to be asked for help. You may think that you may have nothing to offer, but by being fully present during a conversation, you will be surprised at how the dots can connect.
  • Be self-aware. Self-awareness goes a long way in networking. Know your limits and avoid being pushy. Remember that people are helping you because they want to, and if you push too hard, you are taking advantage of their goodwill.
