The virtual equities trading competition at the pioneer 2021 NSE-AIB University Stock Market Challenge (USMC) came to an end on the 28th January 2022 with seven students from Strathmore University Business School (SBS) and Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) leading in the top 10 positions. Agnes Mbuvi, Looqmann Mohamed, and Kennedy Mwangi won the top three positions with a magnificent trading profit of 350%, 321%, and 296% respectively from an initial investment of Kshs. 100,000 dummy monies provided by the challenge organizers. Maryanne Wekesa, Dylan Maua, Denver Makama, and Shawn Shivere emerged positions 5, 6, 9, and 10 respectively.
The three-month equity investment challenge, which commenced on November 1st, 2021, simulated live trading activity at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) via a virtual trading account over the NSE digital academy platform. The challenge was organized by AIB AXYS, a financial services firm in partnership with the Nairobi bourse with a vision of enhancing proficiency in capital market investing and creating skilled and confident stock investors.
A total of 93 students from Strathmore University competed with 239 students from four other local Universities, that is, the University of Nairobi, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, St Paul’s University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
The award ceremony was held virtually on February 1st, 2022, with the chief guests being the NSE CEO, Mr. Geoffrey Odundo, and AIB AXYS CEO, Mr. Paul Mwai. Mr. Odundo underscored the importance of investor education as one of the NSE key pillars. He encouraged the young investors to possess hard and soft skills and be innovative as the need for global talent is becoming more crucial with the world becoming a global village. Mr. Odundo noted that in Sub-Saharan Africa, microfinance has been enhanced with the digitization of financial products, making access to capital much easier. Other officials at the ceremony were: Mr. Jackson Kiminje, the NSE Training, and Public Education Manager as well as Ms. Nailantei Kamotho, Project Leader at AIB AXYS Africa.
Agnes Mbuvi was awarded an automatic internship with AIB AXYS Africa with the top three winners getting cash prizes deposited in a real stock trading account with AIB AXYS. All participating students will get certificates to recognize and appreciate their participation in the investment challenge.
