On Friday, 9th June 2023, 56 senior leaders of the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) from Cameroon and Ghana graduated from the Leadership, Management and Governance (LMG) Program. Of the 56 participants, we had 2 participants from the Rwanda cohort join the Cameroon cohort for the last module.

The participants graduated after successful completion of the fourth and last module held at the Strathmore University Business School in Nairobi. This is the second graduation, coming after the successful graduation of the Kenya and Rwanda cohort on 19th May 2023.

The Program’s focus will now shift to Mali and Cote d’Ivoire where participants will begin Module 1 towards the end of July 2023.

The LMG Program is part of a grant by the BMGF to facilitate Leadership, Management, and Governance (LMG) training to the senior leadership of NMCP and MOH in 6 countries – Kenya, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Rwanda, and Cameroon.

Malaria eradication is a top priority for BMGF with focus on three key areas:

(a) Reduction of the burden of malaria by expanding the use of effective existing tools, including preventive medication and case management, improving disease surveillance and data for decision-making high-burden settings

(b) Acceleration of progress toward eradication by investing in next-generation surveillance systems, elimination in regions where drug-resistant malaria has emerged, and research and development efforts

(c) Getting ahead of resistance by eliminating falciparum malaria – the type that causes the most severe cases – by developing a robust pipeline of new treatments, and analyzing disease and mosquito genetic data to quickly respond to threats. For this to be achieved, it is important for malaria leadership in Africa to be equipped with LMG skills to facilitate informed decision making across several policy implementation levels of the health systems.
