In an era where our personal and professional lives are intertwined, personal branding stands out as a strategic endeavour for all of us. Personal branding is no longer confined to corporate circles, but rather has become a dynamic force shaping how we are perceived and connected both in our personal and professional circles. Further, in today’s ever-evolving landscape of contemporary business, the significance of relationships takes centre stage with the role of interpersonal connections in professional success and personal growth coming out as highly important.
Personal branding goes beyond the conventional perception of self-promotion, in fact, personal branding is not an exercise of self-centeredness, but rather, is a strategic endeavour focused on delivering unique value to others. It emphasises the authenticity and distinctiveness that everyone brings to the table.
In our personal lives, personal branding influences how people navigate relationships, communities, and even their own sense of self. On the other hand, in professional circles, personal branding is a strategic endeavour aimed at positioning oneself in a competitive landscape.
Eva Muraya, CEO, BSD Group, and alumna of the MBA for Executives Programme at Strathmore University, speaking during an alumni reunion, noted the importance of being intentional with personal branding. She emphasised that it was important to have a structured approach to personal branding. She further urged fellow alumni to find their unique value proposition, maintain consistency, be self-aware, and ensure they continually reinvest to enhance their personal brand’s value. Eva shared four guiding principles of principles in personal branding:
- When creating a personal brand, you must find what sets you apart from others and focus on that. This will be your unique value proposition; this what people will relate you with.
- Once you have identified your unique value proposition, the work then begins, and you begin to consistently build your brand in line with this. Consistency is key when it comes to personal branding since it showcases your value proposition in all the things you do, you must therefore be authentic and true to your brand.
- You must also build awareness on who you are and what you stand for as a personal brand. In building awareness, you are letting know about your brand and what you stand for, this you can do by networking, both online and in person.
- Sustained investment. After working on the first three principles, you must then ensure that you invest in your brand, in yourself. Work on making your brand better; endeavour to learn, unlearn and unlearn as you work on building your brand.
Further, she shared five essential qualities an individual needs to adopt in the personal brand development journey: courage, capability, commitment, character and compassion.
Everyone is a brand, consciously or not. Personal branding is a journey of self-discovery, continual self-reflection, and an openness to learning from every experience. It is presented as an ongoing process that demands regular engagement, sharing insights, and active participation in conversations to establish oneself as a thought leader. allows individuals not only to stand out but also to leave a lasting and positive mark in the world.
