Today’s healthcare sector is rapidly transforming, driven by rising patient expectations, technological advancements, regulatory changes, and increasing competition. In this evolving landscape, medical excellence remains vital—but it is no longer enough. Healthcare professionals are now expected to lead organizations, develop strategies, manage finances, and navigate dynamic market forces—skills traditionally absent from medical, pharmacy, and nursing education.
While highly skilled medical professionals are the brains behind many healthcare facilities, the sustainable management of these institutions demands more than a passion for patient care. Business leadership, financial acumen, and strategic foresight are now essential for healthcare organizations seeking long-term success.
To bridge this critical gap, Strathmore University Business School (SBS) designed the Managing Healthcare Businesses (MHB) Programme, a course designed to equip healthcare leaders with the knowledge and competencies to manage and grow healthcare enterprises sustainably.
The Programme’s first module, for the 2025 cohort, took place between 22nd and 25th April 2025, focusing on leadership and strategy. Participants engaged in a deep exploration of the healthcare competitive landscape, strategic choice, and organizational capabilities. One of the Programme’s highlights was an interactive case study session by Patricia Gacambi, a Senior Lecturer at SBS. The case, “Tanner Pharmaceuticals and the Price of a New Drug,” offered participants a complex scenario that required balancing production costs, market dynamics, competitive strategy, and ethical considerations—a reflection of the real-world challenges healthcare leaders face.
In addition to core leadership and strategy sessions, participants explored emerging global and local trends shaping the healthcare business landscape. They deepened their understanding of financial literacy, equipping themselves with the language and tools of financiers to better manage the financial health of their institutions. Furthermore, the programme provided insights into navigating complex healthcare systems and engaging effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders—essential skills for any healthcare leader operating in today’s interconnected world.
The Managing Healthcare Businesses Programme underscores the necessity of merging clinical excellence with strategic leadership. As healthcare systems worldwide grapple with new pressures and opportunities, SBS empowers healthcare professionals to deliver patient-centered care while building resilient, impactful institutions. Blending academic excellence with practical insights from industry leaders, the programme addresses the gap between medical expertise and business management. Participants benefit from a mix of business leadership theory and real-world healthcare management practices from local, regional, and international perspectives.
