Empowering the Next Generation: Celebrating Democracy in Kenya

On Friday, 13th September 2024, Strathmore University Business School, in partnership with ForumCiv, hosted the International Day of Democracy celebrations at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC). Democracy, more than just a system of governance, stands as a pillar of peace, justice, and human rights. This day serves both as a celebration of democracy’s achievements and a reminder of the shared responsibility to ensure its continued strength.

Kenya’s democratic journey has been one of resilience and progress, most notably marked by the adoption of the 2010 Constitution—a turning point in the nation’s history. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Democracy is the most difficult form of government. Only the strong can maintain it.” His words remind us that democracy is not self-sustaining. It requires ongoing participation, accountability, and vigilance to thrive.

This year’s theme, “Empowering the Next Generation,” highlighted the critical role young people play in safeguarding and advancing democracy. Far from being mere leaders of tomorrow, the youth are actively shaping change today.

During the event, Shadrack Mwagangi, Director of Executive Education at Strathmore Business School, emphasized the institution’s dedication to cultivating ethical leadership across Africa. “At Strathmore University, we believe that education is the cornerstone of this empowerment,” he said. “Our mission is to foster ethical leadership, where young people are not only encouraged to challenge the status quo but are equipped to do so with integrity and innovation. Education and civic engagement go hand in hand, and our role extends beyond the classroom. We are committed to shaping future leaders who will influence public policy, advocate for ethical governance, and champion social justice. Through collaborations such as our partnership with ForumCiv, we actively contribute to strengthening the democratic fabric of our institutions.”

A panel discussion, themed “AI for Democracy,” explored how technology can be harnessed to support democratic processes. Dr. Kamau Wairuri, Director of the Strathmore Institute of Public Policy and Governance, underscored the importance of using technology as an enabler of political accountability and transparency in governance.

The celebrations culminated in the official launch of the NextGen Leaders Fellowship, a program co-developed by Strathmore University and ForumCiv. The fellowship aims to provide young leaders with essential skills, mentorship, and access to networks that will help them lead with purpose. By equipping the next generation with these tools, the program is investing in the future champions of democracy—those who will not only defend democratic values but also drive their evolution, both locally and globally.

Ultimately, democracy is not the work of a select few; it is a collective endeavor. It demands the active involvement of every citizen, the strength of our voices, and our unwavering commitment to its principles. Together, we can build a future where Kenya, Africa, and the world flourish through justice, transparency, and inclusion.
