Earlier this month, the Garissa County Government held a healthcare workshop bringing together healthcare leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders to explore solutions for strengthening healthcare systems.
Spearheaded by Dr. Hawa Boi and Dr. Amal, alumni of the Advanced Healthcare Management Programme at Strathmore University Business School, this workshop marked a significant step in addressing critical healthcare challenges within the region.
Under the guidance of Professor Gilbert Kokwaro, Director, Institute of Healthcare Management at Strathmore Business School the workshop provided an insightful platform for tackling pressing issues such as resource mobilization, negotiation skills, and conflict management in the healthcare sector.
The workshop focused on three key areas: strengthening health systems, health resource mobilization, negotiation and conflict management.
The discussions on strengthening health systems centered on enhancing infrastructure, building workforce capacity, and integrating technology to improve service delivery. Participants examined practical strategies to optimize resource allocation and ensure equitable healthcare access for all residents of Garissa County.
Resource mobilization emerged as another critical theme, as sustainable funding remains a significant challenge in the region. Various financing mechanisms, including public-private partnerships, grants, and community-based funding models, were explored as potential solutions to secure long-term healthcare investments.
Recognizing the importance of negotiation skills in securing resources and partnerships, the workshop delved into stakeholder engagement techniques, navigating contractual agreements, and advocacy for better healthcare provisions. Conflict management was also a key area of focus, as workplace disputes can disrupt healthcare service delivery. Through practical sessions, attendees gained valuable insights into effective communication and dispute resolution strategies, reinforcing the need for a collaborative and harmonious work environment.
The workshop’s interactive format, which included expert panel discussions, breakout sessions, and networking opportunities, fostered meaningful knowledge exchange. Panel discussions featured insights from healthcare professionals and policy experts who shared successful strategies implemented in other regions. Breakout sessions allowed participants to engage in smaller, more focused discussions, where they analyzed specific healthcare challenges and proposed actionable solutions. Additionally, the workshop facilitated strategic networking, enabling attendees to connect with peers, policymakers, and academic leaders, laying the groundwork for potential collaborations that could shape the future of healthcare in Garissa County.
Several key outcomes emerged from the workshop, highlighting a collective commitment to sustainable healthcare improvements. Participants emphasized the need for a collaborative framework that strengthens partnerships between government agencies, NGOs, and healthcare providers. At the end of the workshop, an action plan was developed to guide improvements in healthcare delivery, resource mobilization, and professional training. The workshop also underscored the importance of continued education and training, with a strong consensus on the necessity of ongoing capacity-building programs for healthcare professionals. Additionally, the implementation of a monitoring and evaluation system was identified as a priority to assess progress and ensure the effectiveness of healthcare initiatives.
With a clear action plan and strengthened collaborations, healthcare stakeholders in Garissa County are now better positioned to create a resilient, efficient, and inclusive healthcare system. The insights gained from this workshop will serve as a foundation for long-term transformation, setting Garissa County on a path toward improved healthcare access, sustainability, and overall well-being.
