Senior Lecturers Facilitate Case Method Workshop

Dr. Freddie Acosta – Senior Lecturer, Strathmore Business School and Dr. David Wangombe – Dean, School of Management and Commerce, Strathmore University were among a team of four faculty experts who facilitated an African faculty development workshop on case method teaching and participant-centered pedagogies in Nairobi, Kenya from 2 – 4August, 2013. Other facilitators were Dr. Emmanuel Kodzi, Senior Lecturer, Operations Management, Gordon Institute of Business Science, SA, and Prof Luca Brusati, Public Policy and Management Department, Bocconi University School of Management, Milan, Italy.

The participants were lecturers and professors of public policy and management from different schools and universities in Africa. The workshop was an initiative of the Partnership for African Social and Governance Research (PASGR). PASGR seeks to increase the capacity of African academic institutions and researchers to produce research which can inform social policy and governance, through a research collaborative higher education programme, initially at the master’s level. The technical expertise was provided by Global Business School Network (GBSN). GBSN designs and implements capacity building programs that enable business schools in developing countries to better serve their markets. GBSN selects faculties from all over the world to facilitate in their training programs.

Dr Acosta is the Faculty Director at SBS. He is an alumnus of Teaching the Practice of Management (TPM) of the IFC/AABS (2005) and Colloquium in Participant-Centred Learning (CPCL) of Harvard Business School (2006). Since then, Dr Acosta has taught using the case method in the fields of Technology and Innovation Management, and facilitated training programs in many different countries including South Africa, Ghana, Senegal, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya. Dr Acosta is also a prolific and award-winning case writer. Two of his cases have won awards in international case writing competition.

Dr. Wangombe is an alumnus of the International Faculty Program (IFP) of IESE Business School (2008) and Teaching the Practice of Management (TPM) of the IFC/AABS. He has also conducted research and consultancy assignments for the IFC, Government of Kenya, and several private companies. He has also written several cases for teaching particularly business executives. Dr. Wangombe has extensively used case methodology for executive training in many different countries including South Africa, Ghana, Rwanda, Uganda, Ethiopia and Kenya. This was the second time Dr. Wangombe was facilitating the PASG workshop, the first one being April 2013.
