UAP Old Mutual Take on SBS’ Aspire Leadership Development Programme

  Jan 25, 2019

2018 saw UAP Old Mutual, one of Kenya’s top financial solutions companies, enroll 40 of its management staff at Strathmore University Business School (SBS) to a customized solution package dabbed ‘Aspire Leadership Development Programme. The Programme was designed by SBS in liaison with the client company itself. It was aimed at building the leadership capabilities of their senior staff in change management, cultural integration, strategy execution, stakeholder management, people management and performance management.

SBS in its’ mission to provide world-class executive management education offers a range of customized solutions that focus on providing clients with tailored and bespoke custom programmes and consultations that ensure solutions to organizations’ unique and specific needs. Dr. George Njenga, Executive Dean SBS, was optimistic as the programme began, stating “By the time your managers and leaders are through with our programme you already have a change in your organization within the first 3 months. This is because each member of your management team will be coached towards delivering a particular part of that strategy that we have come up with.”

Deputy Executive Dean, Executive Education SBS, had oversight over the programme design and content. It was structured in 4 modules of 5 days each. The programme included Leadership Challenge/Work based Projects whereby participants formed groups with a mix of members from across the business, identified problem areas within various business lines and developed solutions seeking to address these challenges. Team coaching for the projects (action learning) was also incorporated in between the modules.

When all was said and done it came time for graduation. Linda Wasike, Aspire Development Programme Class President, gave us her sentiments on behalf of her class mates saying “what stood out to us was the delivery approach. The programme was unique/ customized to our context and the development of the whole programme was in line with our strategic intent and so it was very easy for us to gel with the content”. The graduation ceremony went on to culminate in Show-and-Tell sessions where participants showcased their work-based projects to stakeholders with a view of gaining buy-in and sponsorship as they embark on implementing the projects in their business.

Mr. Peter Mwangi, UAP Old Mutual Group CEO, addressed his staff saying “I believe passionately that leadership development is more than just what you do in the business. You should be operating now at a higher level of leadership and that means to impact UAP Old Mutual for sure but also our broader society. We intend to continue partnering with Strathmore Business School to expose more of our people to this kind of training”. The Group CEO based his sentiments on the overall conclusion that SBS know what they are doing, deliver courses that are relevant and taught by means of case study of which staff can relate, they have a solid value system and are striving for the same bigger objective that UAP Old Mutual are.

The projects presented are set to be monitored periodically in collaboration with Strathmore business school to ensure that they are fully implemented for the business to realize value for the investment. I don’t know about you, but I look forward to yet another success story for SBS.
