In the fast-paced business landscape, many entrepreneurs and business leaders tend to focus on metrics such as profit margins, market shares, and competitive strategies as the primary indicators of success. However, often overlooked are the softer, intangible elements are equally crucial in driving long-term growth and sustainability. These soft building blocks, such as leadership development, emotional intelligence, and personal alignment with purpose, differentiate thriving businesses from those that merely survive. In an increasingly competitive and technologically advanced business environment, the ability to innovate, adapt, and stay connected to both personal values and customer needs is becoming more important than ever.

Sally Mahihu, Founder and CEO of Seasoned Woman Forum and the Board Chairperson for Ken Invest, believes that the hidden “soft” factors in business are often the key drivers of sustainable success. Speaking while giving her keynote address at the recently concluded 12th Annual SME Conference and Expo, Sally noted that while financial performance and strategic growth are important, it’s the foundational aspects—self-awareness, purpose, values, and people—that ultimately create businesses with resilience, impact, and lasting influence. “Addressing these hidden factors is especially important for women entrepreneurs, who may face additional challenges such as risk aversion, balancing societal expectations, and navigating male-dominated industries,” Sally noted. Sally shared the seven Ps, which she believes serve as the hidden foundations that every entrepreneur, especially women entrepreneurs, should embrace to unlock their full potential and grow their businesses.

The Person – Self-Awareness & Identity

The first step to business success starts with self-awareness. Knowing yourself—your strengths, weaknesses, and unique gifts—is essential for navigating the complex world of entrepreneurship. When you are clear on who you are, you can focus on what you bring. Your business journey begins with understanding yourself. When you know your strengths, you can leverage them for success.

Passion and Purpose

Passion is the fuel that keeps entrepreneurs going. Sally asks: Do you know where you thrive? Identifying what excites you and aligns with your purpose is key to choosing the right business venture. Too many people find themselves in the wrong race, chasing ideas that don’t align with their interests or strengths. But when you pursue what you love, you’ll not only enjoy the process but also create a business that stands out in a crowded marketplace. Passion is not just a motivational phrase—it’s the secret to finding your unique niche and thriving in it.

Understand Your Place

To succeed in any industry, you need to understand the landscape you’re operating in. Sally reminds entrepreneurs that the onus is on them to master the dynamics of their specific business fields. Understanding your place allows you to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.

Your People – Building the Right Network

The people you surround yourself with will either elevate or limit your business. Entrepreneurs are intentional about building networks that reflect shared values and mutual growth. Align yourself with people who support and challenge you and set boundaries to protect your energy and focus.

Process – Trust the Journey

Building a successful business doesn’t happen overnight. Sally reminds us that trusting the process is key to long-term success. There will be setbacks, but resilience and adaptability are crucial. Success is a journey, not a destination. Be patient, stay resilient, and keep reinvesting in your business.

Principles – Build with Integrity

In a world where shortcuts can seem tempting, building businesses based on strong principles is imperative. Integrity, professionalism, and ethical practices are non-negotiable for long-term success. A company built on solid principles not only earns the trust of customers and partners but also stands the test of time.

Price – Reap the Harvest

What is your harvest? In business, success isn’t just about making profits; it’s about what you do with them. Like a farmer who doesn’t eat all his seeds, entrepreneurs must reinvest their gains into their business to fuel further growth. Sally also emphasizes that legacy matters—how will you handle your business after achieving success? Building a legacy means thinking beyond immediate profits and focusing on long-term impact.

Sally Mahihu’s “Seven Ps” provided a holistic approach to entrepreneurship. For women entrepreneurs, Sally’s message was compelling as she encouraged women to step out of their comfort zones, embrace risk, and continually invest in their skills and networks. By mastering these hidden soft building blocks, you can grow your business while creating a meaningful, legacy.
