Unlocking the Economic Potential of Lake Turkana: A Collaborative Approach to Sustainable Development
The Water Governance and Innovation Hub at Strathmore University, in partnership with UNESCO, the World Food Programme, the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the National Museums of Kenya, is proud to announce the launch of the “Sustainably Unlocking the Economic Potential of Lake Turkana Project: Water and Food Security, World Heritage Sites, and Biodiversity.” This visionary initiative is dedicated to fostering sustainable development around one of Kenya’s most vital natural resources, Lake Turkana.
As a first step, the project team is currently in Lodwar, training 30 enumerators who will be gathering essential data from key sub-catchment areas, including Nakoret, Nachukui, Kalokol, and Todonyang.
On the second day, the project team geared up for an extensive data collection phase, with the training on enumerators focusing on several key areas:
- Understanding the Questionnaire: Enumerators took a deep dive into the survey instrument to ensure clarity and consistency in responses. They reviewed the questions, ensuring they are well-understood in English, Swahili, and the Turkana language.
- Ethical Data Collection: Emphasizing the importance of respecting respondent privacy and obtaining informed consent, the enumerators conducted a dry run on how to approach different individuals and households when collecting data.
- Field Technique: Best practices for approaching respondents, recording data, and handling challenging situations were covered to prepare the enumerators for the realities of fieldwork.
- Technical Use: The team of enumerators was familiarized with digital tools to streamline data entry and minimize errors, ensuring the collection of high-quality data.
Additionally, 54 participants representing various key stakeholders have undergone comprehensive training designed to ensure a deep understanding of the project’s roles, survey elements, and stakeholder contributions. This training lays the groundwork for a balanced approach to harnessing the potential of Lake Turkana while preserving its unique ecosystem.
The project aims to develop strategies that not only promote economic growth but also ensure environmental sustainability and social inclusion. By working closely with local communities, stakeholders, and experts, we are committed to creating a sustainable future for Lake Turkana, safeguarding its natural heritage while unlocking its economic potential for the benefit of all.
