Reflection: Who can I become?

An inner yearning is deeply embedded in the human psyche to live a meaningful life. We are programmed to search for meaning intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally in our daily tasks. We dream of being more, whether that is being more skilled, successful, impactful, spiritual, wealthy, and so on. Living up to our full potential is a deeply human aspiration. The idea that you have a purpose, a mission, something to contribute, can be a powerful motivator.

So why do many of us fail to find and act on this inner calling? Do we lack ability or opportunity? Do we lack clarity? Or do we have internal and external barriers that quietly shape our paths and make us fall short of our potential destiny? Understanding why we miss out on our full potential may be the first step toward reclaiming it.

Fear of failure

Fear is perhaps the most common limiting factor. I have encountered many individuals who stayed in unfulfilling jobs for far too long because of the fear of the unknown. They were unhappy where they were, but stepping out and changing proved a herculean task. They would complain and over-analyse situations that must be tackled with decisive action. Only when the discomfort grew impossible to bear did they finally face their fears and move into new situations. They wanted to play it safe and choose security over growth. In some instances, this may be appropriate. However, while it is important to test the waters and look before you leap, you cannot afford to avoid taking action forever. Pay attention to your gut instinct. Do not limit yourself to what feels comfortable when you have outgrown a role. Remember, potential lives just beyond the boundary of comfort. We rarely cross it because staying where it feels safe is easier.

Becoming jaded

Life can be difficult, it can be disappointing, and it can hurt you. Failure will happen. There I have said it. Now, when it happens, you have a decision to make. Will you get back up and try again? And if it knocks you down again, will you get up and try yet again? Or will you settle where you are and tell yourself it was not meant to be.

I teach a Self-Development class, and watching people become unstuck through this class is deeply satisfying. Repeated cycles of failure can keep you stuck when they cause you to give up. Bitterness can set in. I have witnessed this happening to students who struggle academically or with other situations they have been exposed to. However, reigniting that spark of hope can make all the difference, and reframing how people view and interpret a situation can be a game-changer.

If you have become jaded by difficult circumstances, question your story about the situation. Challenge your assumptions and interpretations. Do not disempower yourself by adopting a victim mindset. This might be holding you back and preventing you from trying again or trying something new. Change the story, change your life.

Lack of clarity

You cannot reach your potential if you do not know what it actually looks like to reach it. Do you have a vision for your life? Many people never pause to define what “success” or “growth” means. If you do not make time to do the inner work required to live a purpose-filled life, you will be a drifter. These people fall victim to circumstance. The wind blows them, and they never intentionally set the direction for their life. I firmly believe that people influence how their life unfolds and can consciously direct their lives. Even when circumstances are beyond our control, we still have the power to choose how we respond to them. Those choices are what shape our destiny. Are you settled in routines that keep you busy but not necessarily fulfilled? Are you living out someone else’s dream for your life? Clarity brings intentionality, and intentionality is the foundation of reaching your potential. Working with a Coach can help you unpack your limiting beliefs. Coaching can also help you discover your strengths and values. These act as an inner compass to help you chart a meaningful path for your life.

Social conditioning and expectations

From a young age, parents, teachers, peers, and society tell us who we should be. Birth order and social conditioning in our formative years can also influence who we become. All these external voices can drown out our internal calling. We pursue careers or lifestyles that others value, not realizing until much later that they do not align with our authentic selves. Do you know what your version of success looks like?

I have coached many individuals influenced by their parents’ expectations and the social role they were ‘assigned’ in their family. I worked with an individual who had left for many years to pursue a career abroad. This person was very introverted and did not contribute much to family discussions. However, the years of separation had allowed this person to blossom without social hindrance into a more extroverted, confident person. When the person returned to join the family business, he regressed into his ‘childhood role.’ This did not sit well with him. He found himself suppressing his ideas about transforming the business and began feeling invisible.

However, when we worked through these layers of social conditioning and limiting beliefs, he was able to break free from these limitations and drive positive change. Others actually welcomed his ideas and were pleased with his contribution. When we become stuck in behaviour patterns that were programmed in childhood, it limits our potential. Remember, we all evolve with time and experience. Always question your beliefs about yourself. You will become who you think you can become. Your self-perception is the limiting factor.

Impatience and Instant Gratification

Playing the long game in life has become harder because we live in an age of instant gratification. Our world puts a premium on speed and short-term rewards. However, developing your potential requires commitment, patience, and dedication. Mastery is not for the lazy. The “10,000-hour rule,” popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers, suggests that 10,000 hours of deliberate practice is the magic number for achieving world-class expertise in any field. The temptation to give up, switch tracks, or seek quick wins can sabotage the deep work and resilience needed for real, lasting growth. Mastery is what will set you apart. Aim for mastery if you want to be at the top of your game. Coasting on autopilot and giving in to your whims and distractions will cost you the future you have dreamed about.

In conclusion, there will never be a perfect moment to start pursuing your potential. Do not wait until you are ready. Start doing the work of becoming. It begins with the inner work that will transform your outer reality. The longer we wait, the harder it becomes to start. Potential is not fixed; keep reaching for your higher self, and you might surprise yourself one day. It begins with one question: Who can I become?
