The Kenya Business Guide (KBG) held its monthly media briefing on 26th February 2019 at The Hanns Seidel Foundation Kenya, dubbed ‘Privatise or die’: restructuring State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) for economic growth. The talk was conducted by Strathmore University Business School (SBS) Alumnus Mr. Sahil Shah who works as the KBG Project Lead.
The media briefings are aimed at providing relevant, value added, accurate, balanced and current information on Kenya’s business environment. The aim of the briefing was to provide an overview of state-owned Enterprises (SOEs) in Kenya and give insights on how they can be restructured to boost Kenya’s economic outlook. SOEs have existed since independence as key players in various markets of the economy. Throughout the world, they have been used to build markets and sectors for job creation and development. However, in Kenya, the majority of SOEs have not demonstrated economic viability with regards to their role and utility. Here we revisit the conversation on the role of SOEs in Kenya’s economy.
