Over the past week, SBS students undertaking the Masters in Public Policy and Management (MPPM) have been at the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity in London for their international module. Led by Prof. Henrietta Moore, the Founder and Director of the institute, the week-long module features a deep dive into the intricacies of global prosperity and policy formulation.

The inaugural sessions of the module set the stage for stimulating discussions on global prosperity and the role of emerging markets. With a keen focus on the London Securities Exchange, participants explored the nuances of economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and its alternatives in shaping policies for sustainable development.

Prof. Jacqueline McGlade, alongside Jorge Perez of UCL and Geoff Horrell, former Head of London Securities Exchange Environment and Sustainability, guided the deliberations, shedding light on innovative approaches to measuring prosperity and incorporating local priorities into decision-making processes. The sessions then turned to the Citizen Prosperity Index, a groundbreaking initiative piloted in East London and now adopted in Kenya, Tanzania, and Lebanon. This novel approach aims to empower communities by amplifying their voices in policy formulation, thereby fostering inclusive and sustainable development.

On the second day, participants had the privilege of delving into the realm of international cooperation as they visited The Commonwealth Secretariat. With a membership spanning 56 countries and encompassing diverse economies and cultures, The Commonwealth stands as a beacon of unity and collaboration. The discussions revolved around key areas such as the role of The Commonwealth in promoting development, democracy, and peace, as well as initiatives like the Commonwealth Carbon Tax Model Law and Ocean Actions aimed at addressing pressing global challenges. Facilitated by Sarah Chaytor, Director of Research Strategy & Policy at UCL and Prof. Robert Constanza, a Professor of Ecological Economics at the Institute of Global Prosperity at UCL and the Editor-in-Chief of The Athropocene Review, the sessions delved into the intersections of policy, economics, and environmental stewardship, underscoring the imperative of holistic approaches to global governance and sustainability.

As the module ended, participants engaged in thought-provoking conversations on transformative entrepreneurship and the power of citizen science in shaping policy agendas. These sessions, led by visionary experts in the field, illuminated pathways towards inclusive and sustainable prosperity, emphasizing the crucial role of innovation, collaboration, and community engagement in driving positive change on a global scale.
