On Wednesday 3rd July 2024, we began a revolution in the Kenyan Supply Chain industry by launching the Supply Chain Leaders Roundtable Series. These sessions were born from the urge to create a network of like-minded supply chain and logistics professionals with the aim of envisioning the future of logistics and supply chain management in Kenya and Africa at large.

So far, there have been 2 insight sessions which have not only fueled dreams but also laid out a clear path for the advancements we aspire to achieve in this critical sector.

The first session focused on assessing where the industry is today, what are the current challenges and opportunities and what is the way forward. One of the pertinent issues that came up was the industry’s participation in policy development. From the discussions, it came out clearly that the industry is hungry to be at the policy making table. “The voice of the supply chain practitioner needs to be included in pertinent discussions that help shape the future of our economies and that of the continent at large,” said one participant.

For the second session, our keynote speaker, Prof. Jonathan Annan, Associate Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain at Strathmore University set the tone for the event by referencing Agenda 2063 and the Africa we envision. He painted a vivid picture: “Imagine an African continent without boundaries, where commerce flows freely between states, and goods and services are exchanged without the constraints of complex and often expensive customs procedures and tariffs.” This vision of a borderless Africa trading seamlessly is a powerful motivator for all of us involved in the logistics and supply chain industry,” Prof. Annan noted

The discussions were rich with insights and actionable ideas, focusing on overcoming the current challenges and seizing future opportunities in African supply chain management. Three key conversation areas emerged:

Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges

One of the primary obstacles to supply chain expansion in Africa is the lack of sufficient infrastructure. The discussions underscored the urgent need for substantial investments in transport corridors across the continent. By fostering public-private partnerships and public-public partnerships, Africa can enhance connectivity and build complete, efficient supply chains.

Building Trust Among African Governments

Another critical issue highlighted was the lack of trust among African governments, which impedes inter-trade developments and, consequently, the expansion of supply chains. Establishing a framework for transparent and trustworthy inter-governmental relations is crucial.

Addressing Food Insecurity

Africa’s struggle with food insecurity despite periods of overproduction. The waste of surplus food during these times is a major issue. The forum called for sustainable practices to reduce this waste. Efficient supply chain strategies can help store, distribute, and use surplus food effectively, addressing food insecurity and minimizing waste.

About the Supply Chain Leaders Roundtable
