On Monday, August 12, 2024, the Senior Management Leadership Programme (SMLP) kicked-off its international module at Nanyang Business School in Singapore. Over the course of one week, participants engaged in a series of intensive sessions designed to immerse them in the dynamic Asian business landscape.

The module began with sessions on cross-border negotiations and nurturing new ventures, led by Prof. Joo-Seng Tan and Prof. Vijay Sethi, both Faculty members at Nanyang Business School. These discussions provided participants with valuable insights into managing business operations across different cultural and regulatory environments.

On the second day, the focus shifted to strategic thinking and further exploration of new venture growth by Prof. Vijay Sethi, a renowned expert in Information Technology & Operations Management, at Nanyang Business School.  Prof. Chow Hou Wee, a distinguished Professor of Strategy and Marketing, facilitated a case study on “Sun Zi Bingfa & Strategic Leadership: The Asian Way” which marked an end to the in-class sessions for that day.  The day concluded with an insightful campus tour of Nanyang Technological University, offering participants a glimpse into the university’s state-of-the-art facilities.

The third day delved into understanding consumer behavior in Asia and strategies for expanding business horizons while managing diversity. These sessions were led by Prof. Sharon Ng, Associate Professor of Marketing and Technology and Deputy Dean of Nanyang Business School. Her expertise provided participants with a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities in the Asian market.

Day 4 featured industry visits to two organizations and a cultural immersion. The first visit was to CMA CGM, a French-based container shipping company with a presence in 160 countries, making it the 3rd largest in the world. Their core operations include shipping, port management, supply chain services, and warehousing. Four senior leaders from their Singapore office guided the participants through key aspects of their organizational leadership, strategy, and client experience.

Next, the participants proceeded to The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore, the national urban planning authority under the Ministry of National Development. The URA is responsible for Singapore’s long-term and medium-term land use planning, with reviews every 10 and 5 years. The participants gained valuable insights into the URA’s mandate, history, and future land use plans for the nation.

The day concluded with a cultural immersion in Chinatown, Singapore, where participants delved into the rich Chinese heritage of the city. They experienced the vibrant atmosphere, explored historical monuments, and savored traditional cuisine, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances that shape Singapore’s diverse society.

The module culminated in a graduation ceremony where the participants were awarded certificates on successful completion of the module.
