This week, we are hosting healthcare professionals and students for the Behavioral Communication Strategies for Global Epidemics Programme (BCSE) 2024, a Programme offered by the New York University School of Global Public Health in partnership with UNICEF and Strathmore University Business School (SBS).

The BCSE Programme, which kicked-off on Friday, January 12, 2023, seeks to co-create science-driven, human rights-focused, and region-specific strategies. These strategies, grounded in empirical evidence and collective experiences, aim to build Social and Behavior Change (SBC) competencies among participants. The collaborative effort aspires to offer viable solutions to the complex health challenges faced by communities in the region.

This year’s Programme brings together participants hailing from Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, Malawi, Mozambique, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the United States of America (USA). The diverse backgrounds and experiences brought to the table enhance the richness of the discussions and potential solutions.

To gain firsthand insights into the dynamics and challenges of the healthcare environment in Kenya, participants engaged in a visit to Kayole Level 4 Hospital. During this visit, they interacted with community healthcare volunteers to better understand the dynamics of the cholera outbreak in Nairobi County and eventually developed a systems map for cholera. This practical exercise deepened their understanding of the causes of cholera in the area and highlighted the mitigation measures implemented by the community healthcare volunteers to curb its spread.

In the coming week, participants will immerse themselves in a comprehensive exploration of global epidemics, with a specific focus on East and Southern Africa. The Programme includes in-class sessions led by faculty from NYU and SBS, interactions with the UNICEF team, visits to local healthcare centers, engagement with industry experts through panel discussions, and active participation in syndicate group discussions.

This collaborative initiative not only addresses current health challenges but also fosters a platform for cross-cultural exchange, knowledge sharing, and the development of innovative strategies. By combining academic expertise, field experiences, and insights from diverse regions, the BCSE Programme aims to contribute meaningfully to the global effort to combat epidemics and enhance public health outcomes. The collaborative spirit and multi-disciplinary approach of the BCSE 2024 Program underscore the commitment to building a resilient and responsive global healthcare community.
