Between 8th and 12th April 2024, students undertaking the Master of Science in Development Finance Programme and the Master of Commerce Programme visited the Hochschule Mainz University of Applied Sciences in Germany for their international module.

The module began with a warm reception as the University’s Dean greeted the students, along with the international office team and Prof. Claudia. An enlightening workshop on intercultural competence set the tone for the days ahead, emphasizing the importance of understanding and embracing cultural diversity in today’s interconnected world. A comprehensive tour of the university facilities followed, offering a glimpse into the academic prowess and innovative spirit that define Hochschule Mainz—the day culminated with a captivating lecture on campus and an enchanting city tour of Mainz Town, steeped in history and charm.

Venturing beyond the confines of Mainz, day two saw the students embark on a journey to Frankfurt, Germany’s bustling financial hub. A visit to the Deutsche Bundesbank provided invaluable insights into the role and tasks of the German Central Bank, complemented by a presentation from André Kühne. The afternoon session unfolded with a cultural immersion at Appelwein Wagner, where traditional cuisine provided a savoury respite amidst the day’s activities. The students then had the opportunity to explore and indulge in retail therapy, discovering the vibrant Frankfurt urban landscape.

Day three featured sessions on international finance. After that, the students’ tour of the FC Mainz MEWA Arena offered a glimpse into the intersection of sports and business, highlighting Germany’s passion for both. The following sessions in the afternoon delved into the topics of innovation in Germany and its implications for employment in Africa, fostering insightful discussions and cross-cultural exchanges among the students.

On Thursday, the students got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of SWR Radio station in Mainz, getting a firsthand glimpse into the world of broadcast journalism. A visit to Kloster Eberbach provided a serene interlude as students toured the historic monastery and indulged in wine tasting, savouring the rich viticultural heritage of the region.

The module ended with a reflective wrap-up session at Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The Dean presided over the ceremony, presenting certificates of attendance to commemorate the students’ participation and engagement throughout the week. With the formalities concluded, students seized the opportunity to explore Mainz town again, culminating in a convivial group dinner at Snitzel Eisgrub, where laughter and camaraderie flowed freely, underscoring the bonds forged during their shared journey of discovery.
