On December 10, 2024, the Strathmore University Business School (SBS) marked a significant milestone in its mission to nurture transformative leadership across Africa. The occasion was the official handover of the curricula for the Next Generation Leadership Programme (NGLP) to Tangaza University in Kenya. Developed under the Porticus Project, the Programme has been a beacon of leadership development in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania over the past six years.
The event, held at Tangaza University, was filled with a sense of celebration and anticipation for what lies ahead. Ms. Mercy Kibe, a trainer and beneficiary of the rigorous Training of Trainers’ (ToT) Programme, expressed her gratitude on behalf of her colleagues. “The ToT training was not just for anyone. We underwent thorough scrutiny before being entrusted with this responsibility,” she said. Ms. Kibe applauded Dr. Freshia Waweru, the Academic Director of the programme, for crafting an approach that empowered them to see themselves as trainers rather than conventional lecturers.
Tangaza University will now steward the Programme with the continued support of SBS, with co-facilitation sessions already planned for May 2025.
In his remarks, Prof. Fr. Patrick Mwania, Vice Chancellor of Tangaza University, warmly welcomed the handover, noting its alignment with the institution’s recent milestone of acquiring a university charter on May 2, 2024. “We are honored to carry forward this impactful programme and ensure it elevates church leaders to new heights of excellence,” he said, thanking Porticus Africa for entrusting Tangaza University with this opportunity to transform leadership in Africa.
Sister Elizabeth, Chair of the NGLP Board, underscored the importance of continuity. “NGLP is a connecting factor, bringing together Porticus Africa, Strathmore University, and Tangaza University. This light must keep shining to reach more leaders,” she said. Sister Elizabeth emphasized the need for collective effort to expand the programme’s reach and impact, with Porticus committing to supporting its growth by engaging more scholars.
Dr. Caesar Mwangi, Executive Dean, Strathmore University Business School reiterated the transformative mission of servant leadership that unites the visions of both Strathmore and Tangaza Universities. “Africa’s transformation requires bold, committed leaders. Porticus has done their part; now it’s our turn to rise to the challenge,” he said, calling for all partners to focus on shaping a brighter future for the continent.
Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University, echoed this sentiment, expressing his confidence in Tangaza University’s ability to not only sustain but elevate the Programme. Drawing a biblical parallel, he likened the handover to Joshua leading the Israelites, posing a critical question to the trainers: “Are you committed to this task?” Dr. Ogutu emphasized that Strathmore’s success would be reflected in Tangaza University’s achievements and assured unwavering support for its journey.
The NGLP is designed to equip church leaders with practical skills in financial management, communication, project management, and more. Dr. Ogutu highlighted the urgent need for universities to serve the church by imparting knowledge that empowers leaders to manage not only spiritual matters but also church operations and businesses.
The handover of the Next Generation Leadership Programme is a testament to the power of collaboration, shared vision, and dedication to Africa’s transformation. With Tangaza University at the helm and the support of Strathmore University and Porticus Africa, the programme is poised to leave an indelible mark on the continent’s leadership landscape.
As the celebrations fade, the real work begins. It’s a call to action for all stakeholders to ensure that the legacy of the NGLP grows, inspiring a generation of leaders committed to serving their communities and driving sustainable change in Africa.
