On Friday, 7th March 2025, Strathmore University Business School (SBS) hosted a memorable Undergraduate Programmes Gala Dinner, bringing together final-year students from the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Financial Services, and Bachelor of Science in Supply Chain and Operations Management programmes. This vibrant evening marked the students’ final major social networking event before they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Caesar Mwangi, Executive Dean of SBS, delivered an inspiring message to equip students with the right mindset as they transition from university to their careers. His key takeaways included:

  • Embrace personal responsibility. Success is built on self-discipline, accountability, and a proactive approach to life. Take ownership of your future by making deliberate, value-driven choices.
  • Trust that your education has equipped you for the journey ahead. SBS has provided you with a strong foundation in knowledge, skills, and ethical leadership. Leverage this education to navigate challenges and seize opportunities.
  • Remember, you are the products of the generations before you. The knowledge, values, and opportunities you have today are a result of the efforts of those who came before you. Honor their legacy by striving for excellence and giving back to society.
  • The world is evolving rapidly—be adaptable, ethical, and transformational leaders: The future demands professionals who are innovative, agile, and principled. Stay open to change, lead with integrity, and strive to make a meaningful impact in your industries and communities.

A key highlight of the evening was the presence of the Oburu family, who were recognized for their generous contribution to student success through the William Thomas Ombaka Oburu Endowment Fund. Established in late 2023 with an initial contribution of Kshs. 1,110,000, this fund aims to support academically talented yet financially disadvantaged students at Strathmore University. The scholarship, announced on December 11, 2024, will benefit students the Bachelor of Commerce Programme the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality and Hotel Management Programme and the Bachelor of Tourism Management Programme. This fund, entrusted to Strathmore University, is a tribute to William’s remarkable life and values and a commitment to nurturing young minds and creating pathways for success.

Speaking on behalf of the family, William’s Sister, Pamela Ager applauded the fourth year students for their hard work during their time at the University. “It is our privilege to acknowledge the hard work of those of you who are taking part in this event, not just the recipients of various awards, but those who will be graduating, acknowledging their family and friends and their support system through this four-year journey. Today is indeed also a very special occasion for us as the Oburu family and we are honored to present shortly the William Mbaka Oburu Award to the Best Final Year Bachelor of Commerce Marketing Specialization student. Our family has for a long time had an association with Strathmore University and it is our hope that the Endowment Fund will carry William’s legacy forward,” Pamela noted.

The lucky student was Daisy Mundia who took home the award for the best Marketing student overall.
