On Friday, 4th April 2025, we marked the end of Module One of the 2025 Cohort of the Women Directors Leadership Programme and the Owner Manager Programme (OMP) with a colourful networking cocktail.
The event featured an inspirational keynote address by Dr. Gladwell-Gichuru-Kiarie, a renowned oncologist. Her insights resonated deeply with the participants as she took them through her leadership journey. Seven takeaways stood out from her leadership journey:
Leadership potential often manifests early.
Dr. Kiarie highlighted several instances when she found herself in positions of leadership, from her days as a medical student at the University of Nairobi to the various leadership roles she has held in her career journey. This highlighted the importance of recognizing and nurturing these talents from a young age.
Support often comes from unexpected places.
Dr. Kiarie encouraged the participants to stay open to receiving guidance and encouragement from various sources, even those they might not initially anticipate. Leadership is not a solitary journey, and sometimes the most valuable support can come from colleagues, mentors, or even individuals outside one’s immediate professional circle. Embracing this broader network of support can enhance a leader’s growth and open up new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
Great leaders unite people.
A central theme of Dr. Kiarie’s address was the role of true leaders in fostering unity. She stressed that effective leadership isn’t just about achieving goals and bringing people together; it also involves fostering collaboration and creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
“Prioritize your soul’s well-being,”
Dr. Kiarie advised, drawing attention to the significance of personal fulfillment and spiritual nourishment in sustaining long-term leadership effectiveness. She noted that leaders who prioritize their own well-being are better equipped to inspire and guide others.
Doing the right thing is a matter of principle; it is not an option.
Reflecting on ethical leadership, Dr. Kiarie asserted that doing the right thing is a matter of principle, regardless of external pressures or circumstances. She encouraged aspiring leaders to uphold integrity as a cornerstone of their professional and personal conduct.
“Your personal life ultimately affects your leadership,”
Dr. Kiarie noted, emphasizing the interconnectedness between personal well-being and professional success. She noted the need to cultivate balance in their personal and professional lives, recognizing that authenticity and empathy are vital traits of effective leadership.
Tough experiences prepare you for the next level.
Addressing the challenges inherent in leadership roles, Dr. Kiarie shared that tough experiences are often transformative, preparing individuals for higher responsibilities and greater impact. Reminiscing on how her days working at the Kenyatta Referral Hospital shaped her work in London during her Oncology Specialist training, she noted, “Every challenge you face makes you stronger, and it’s these tough experiences that will prepare you for the next level. She further urged participants to embrace setbacks as learning opportunities that build resilience and deepen their leadership capabilities.
Dr. Gladwell Kiarie’s keynote address inspired and challenged the participants to embrace their leadership potential, prioritize ethical principles, and cultivate holistic well-being as they strive to break through barriers and lead with purpose in their respective fields.
