Last week, we hosted 23 MBA students from the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM) affiliated Business Schools for the Global Network Week (GNW) 2024. The participating students were pulled from across the globe with representation from the Phillipines, the United States of America, Kenya, Ireland among others, a total of 10 nationalities were represented. On the other hand, 29 SBS MBA students had the opportunity to attend the GNW program in other GNAM-affiliated business schools.

This year’s week was themed; Understanding Business Opportunities and Investment in Emerging Markets and sought to equip the visiting MBA students with knowledge and understanding of the business opportunities and investment options available in emerging markets.

Why the Need to Understand Emerging Markets?

Understanding business opportunities and investment in emerging markets requires a keen awareness of the dynamic and multifaceted nature of these rapidly developing regions. Emerging markets present unique opportunities and challenges for investors and businesses alike. These markets are characterized by , burgeoning middle classes, and increasing urbanization, which drive demand for a wide range of goods and services. However, they also come with inherent risks, such as political instability, regulatory complexities, and infrastructure deficiencies.

The sessions covered a range of topics including understanding the context of emerging markets, marketing strategies, institutions and policy, strategic business options, capital raising, and ethical and social responsibility, among others. Beyond the classroom sessions, the students visited a local enterprise to gain experiential learning that extended their understanding beyond theoretical knowledge. The week also included visits to the Nairobi National Park and Giraffe Center, allowing the visiting students to experience the vibrant wildlife of Nairobi. The week culminated in a dinner at the Carnivore restaurant, providing a memorable end to the program.

About the Global Network for Advanced Management (GNAM)

GNAM is a collaboration of top graduate schools of business in the world that seeks to foster intellectual ties among business schools, students and deans from both economically strong regions and those on the horizon of economic development. It was founded by a consortium of 21 schools and launched on April 27, 2012. The Global Network has since expanded to include over 30 member schools. In Africa, only four top business schools have managed to join the prestigious network, and this includes Strathmore University Business School.

The Global Network Week is an annual program organized by GNAM and gives participating MBA students and Faculty an opportunity to pursue intensive study at another GNAM-affiliated business school in a focused course that leverages the perspectives, programs, and faculty expertise of that school. The network provides an organizational structure to facilitate connections among participants, exchange of ideas, collaboration on data collection and the promotion of research in areas of interest to global commerce.
