On Tuesday 7th March and Wednesday, 8th March 2023, we held a two-day medical assessment camp for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in partnership with the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) and the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya (APDK).

The medical assessment was open to Strathmore University staff members and their relatives living with disability along with the 40 participants going through the Entrepreneurship Accelerator for Persons with Disability. This is a Programme which is currently being implemented by SBS and the APDK with the financial support of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

The PWDs were assessed by a team of medical specialists from Nairobi County and later registered by NCPWD with the aim of fast tracking the issuance of smart cards. The smart card for PWDs is a critical aspect in enabling PWDs and PWDs running businesses to operate and fully access statutory benefits and was identified as a major obstacle to businesses operated by the PWDs.

The Entrepreneurship Accelerator Programme for Persons with Disabilities aims to build the capacity of 40 entrepreneurs with disabilities from within Nairobi to help them grow their businesses.

This Programme also provides an opportunity to advance the agenda  for inclusion and participation of PWDs in entrepreneurship programmes and to highlight the significant role PWDs play in contributing to a robust entrepreneurship landscape in Kenya. The Programme is facilitated by the funding from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
