Over the past two weeks, Strathmore University Business School has  trained 70 senior managers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in a Customised Programme dubbed ‘The Leader as Coach Programme’. This Programme was designed to strengthen the leadership skills of KRA senior managers through inculcating executive coaching.

The senior managers were trained in three cohorts and by the end of the training programme, they were able to acquire leadership coaching skills to help them optimize performance of their teams.

In a world with rapid, constant, and uncertain disruptive change (VUCA – volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity), managers need to give support and guidance rather than instructions, and employees learn to adapt to a changing environment in a way that releases new energy, innovation, and commitment.

An effective leader-as-a-coach asks questions instead of providing answers, supports employees instead of judging them, and facilitates their development instead of dictating what must be done.
