Amisa Rashid, a Master of Public Policy and Management student at Strathmore University Business School, was nominated in the top ten finalists in the Global Student Award 2021, being the only one from East Africa.
The Global Student Prize is a US$100,000 award presented to an exceptional student, making a real impact on learning, the lives of their peers and on society beyond. This year’s finalists were selected from over 3,500 nominations and applications from 94 countries around the world.
Amisa is a mental health advocate and the Founder and Executive Director of Nivishe Foundation. Nivishe is a Kiswahili word which means ‘To Clothe’. “At Nivishe Foundation, we clothe you holistically that is mentally, physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually with the main aim of building community resilience using community based mental health approaches and trauma informed programmes for social cohesion, ” she says when speaking about her work at the Foundation.
Amisa’s rise to global recognition began in Kibera – one of the largest informal settlements in Nairobi, and home to the marginalized Nubian community to which she belongs – where she was born and raised. It is here that she offers mental health awareness and counselling services for her community through her organization, Nivishe Foundation.
“We are based in Kibra because we focus on mental health issues at the community level. This is because most often we forget people at the grassroot levels who go through so much and lack resources and information about mental health,” she adds.
Congratulations Amisa, keep soaring high!
