Last month, the Strathmore Global Institute Uganda took 19 participants of the Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) through an immersive international module at Wits Business School in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This transformative experience brought together participants from various organizations, including Vision Fund Microfinance, KCB Uganda, NCBA Bank Uganda, CRDB Bank Burundi, Wakandi Uganda Limited, Liquid Intelligent Technologies, UAP Old Mutual, and ABSA Bank Uganda, providing a unique opportunity for learning, strategic thinking, and cultural immersion over five days.
The programme commenced with a focus on Operational Excellence, led by Frans van der Colff. In his session, he emphasized the significance of engaging and valuing people to achieve true operational excellence. On day one, the participants also toured the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct, where they explored cutting-edge projects, particularly in animation and gaming. The CEO of the also shared insights into how these innovations are being scaled, showcasing South Africa’s advancements in various sectors, including agriculture and robotics.
Dr. Thabo Mosala facilitated a reflective analysis of organizational strategies on day two as he guided participants through the process of examining their existing strategies and encouraged the development of effective, winning approaches. This hands-on session provided valuable frameworks that blended theoretical concepts with practical applications, empowering participants to strengthen their company strategies.
Day three focused on Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship with Dr. Jabulile Msimango. During this session, participants engaged in discussions around the foundations of intrapreneurial and entrepreneurial innovation, culminating in a panel discussion featuring experts Chimene Chetty, Sibusiso Khosa, and Natasha Anderson. They shared insights on the importance of maintaining focus and energy throughout the entrepreneurial journey, offering practical advice rooted in their own experiences as industry leaders.
Dr. Jenika Gobind then took the participants through a cultural immersion experience that explored the rich history of South Africa and its impact on leadership and culture. The day’s highlight was a visit to the Nelson Mandela Foundation, where participants reflected on Mandela’s leadership values. Touring his post-presidential office and viewing his Nobel Peace Prize provided profound insights into his legacy and the principles of resilience and vision that can guide effective leadership.
The module culminated with a graduation ceremony at Wits Business School, where participants received certificates in recognition of their transformative learning experience.
The Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) is designed to equip senior managers from Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda with advanced leadership skills. Module one is conducted in participants’ home countries, module two is virtual, and module three is an immersive experience at Wits Business School. This unique approach, combined with four individual coaching sessions, enables participants to develop the skills and insights needed to excel as leaders in their respective organizations.
