  Aug 2, 2011

Strathmore Business School will host Tony Elumelu, a widely acknowledged African influential business leader on 10th August 2011. Mr Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings Limited, a private investment vehicle which operates a diverse portfolio of investments across Africa will deliver a key note session to business leaders and entrepreneurs themed ‘Building a Pan – African Business.’

Tony Elumelu was born in Jos, Nigeria in 1963. He is a research economist with B.Sc and M.Sc Degrees in Economics at both graduate and post-graduate levels from Bendel State University and the University of Lagos, respectively. He also attended the prestigious Harvard Business School (AMP) and is an alumnus of IMD, Lausanne, Switzerland. He holds an honorary Doctor of Science Degree from Benue State University and honorary Doctor of Business Administration Degree from University of Nigeria, Nsukk.

Mr Elumelu is noted for his role in shaping the African financial services industry as the driving force behind the United Bank for Africa Plc (UBA). Under his leadership, UBA evolved into a leading African financial services institution, transforming from a single country focused bank into a pan-African institution, which serves over seven million customer accounts in 16 African countries and operates across three continents.

He was voted African Business Leader of the Year by the UK based magazine, Africa Investor in 2006 and African Banker of the Year by African Banker magazine in 2008. He was conferred national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2003 by the Federal Government of Nigeria and was asked to serve on the Presidential Committee on the Global Financial Crisis in 2009 by the President of Nigeria.

Internationally, Mr Elumelu’s contributions to the development of the African economic development are acknowledged through his membership of the World Economic Forum’s Regional Agenda Council on Africa and his presence on the Bretton Woods Committee, which brings together senior leaders in the global banking industry.

Mr Elumelu retired as Chief Executive of United Bank for Africa Plc and is currently the Chairman of Heirs Holdings – an African Propriety investment company and founder of The Tony Elumelu Foundation, which illustrates Mr. Elumelu’s commitment to nurturing a crop of new African business leaders as it is dedicated to the promotion and celebration of business management, entrepreneurship and leadership. He serves on the boards of several companies, in addition to his principal role at Heirs Holdings. He is the Chairman of UBA Capital (Europe) Limited and UBA Metlife Insurance. He chairs the Board Risk and Investment Committee of the Africa Finance Corporation; and is on the Advisory Board of Development Partners International LLP, London.

In April, Strathmore Business School in conjunction with The Tony Elumelu Foundation launched the African Markets Internship Program (AMIP), a program which will provide Strathmore Business School’s MBA students with opportunities for work experience and apprenticeship/internships in other countries.
