The Strathmore Business School (SBS) MBA year two students had a memorable week of learning in IESE Business school in their Barcelona Campus from 19th – 23rd September, where together with the MBA students from Lagos Business School they had five intense days of learning. IESE Business School’s MBA Program has been repeatedly ranked among the top MBA programs from year to year, having received the top spot in 2009 from the Economist magazine. The class of 58 attended this week-long session ‘Doing Business In a Globalized World’. The students had sessions on Global Strategy, Global Marketing, Cross-cultural Management, Innovations, as well as Mergers and Acquisitions. The module comprised of case studies, group discussions as well as group analysis of companies drawn from the Kenyan and Nigerian economy. The companies analysed from Kenya were Kenya Commercial Bank and East Africa Breweries Ltd, while those from Nigeria were Vitafoam and Oando.

The week was not all work and no play since the students from both business schools managed to have dinner at Xup Xup restaurant at the beach as well as at La Cupula in downtown Barcelona. In addition, the SBS students also managed to go to Camp Nou to watch the FC Barcelona against Club Atletico Osasuna game, wherein FC Barcelona scored eight goals in a flamboyant fashion without conceding a single goal. This was a worthy preparation for one of the cases the MBA students were discussing during the week, which was precisely on the globalization opportunities of FC Barcelona as a business. The case discussion was also made more relevant by the students taking a tour of FC Barcelona’s Camp nou during the week. Apart from football, the students managed to tour Barcelona, pay a visit to La Sagrada Familia, and even take a trip to Madrid over the weekend.

Apart from networking opportunities between the two business schools, the MBA students also managed to interact with the current MBA students as well as alumni from IESE during a cocktail. In summary, the module was intense and demanding while at the same time enriching and inspiring.
