Francis Okello, a member of the SBS Advisory Board was appointed a non-executive director of Barclays Africa Group, which is the British lenders holding company on the continent. The appointment, which took effect from 1st October 2014, is deemed to incorporate directors from various markets where Barclays Africa operates.
Mr. Okello is a seasoned business leader with a wealth of knowledge and expertise. He is the Chairman of the board of Barclays Bank of Kenya, TPS Eastern Africa Limited (Serena Group of Hotels and Lodges) and he is also a Non-Executive Director, Nation Media Group Limited (NMG) among others.
Mr. Okello holds an LLB Honours degree from the University of Dar-es-Salaam and is an Albert Parvin fellow of Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University and a fellow of the Kenya Institute of Bankers.
Francis has an active professional interest in Corporate Governance and Environmental Issues. With respect to the latter, Mr. Okello has developed a particular interest on Environment and Sustainable Development as a subject but with a focus on Lender Liability within the overall context of the role of Banks in promoting compliance with environmental laws, a subject on which he has published and lectured widely.
