  May 17, 2013

“Congratulations for creating an institute for healthcare, which will benefit practitioners, and continue with the spirit of infusion of knowledge and skills.” These were the words echoed by the Medical Services Permanent Secretary Mary Ngare during the official launch of Strathmore Business School’s Institute of Healthcare Management on Friday, 17th May 2013.

She stated that there is a need for strong leadership in the healthcare sector as one of the main challenges the sector faces is the implementation of healthcare policies. Dr. Ben Ngoye, Director, Institute of Healthcare Management stated that the institute will focus on innovation, transformational and ethical leadership, which is much needed in the industry. The institute aims at offering improved professional competence of healthcare managers. Its various healthcare programs are designed to develop and enhance the general technical, leadership and management skills of practitioners in health service delivery.

“The institute will invest heavily on industry and academic experts to ensure the delivery of high quality healthcare programs,” affirmed Dr. Ngoye.

The mission of the institute is, ‘Envisioning African families access affordable, safe, high-quality healthcare services from well-run and led public and private health institutions that are effective, efficient and conduct their businesses in an ethical and equitable manner.’

Its vision is, ‘To be the premier destination in Africa for Healthcare Leadership and Management Development from which transformed healthcare leaders and managers deliver to the society in the manner described above.’

IHM will administer Executive certificate programs on an annual or semi-annual basis and will be of two types: open programs, and corporate academy programs. Whilst corporate programs will be tailor-made courses on leadership and management in Healthcare, open programs will include: Managing Healthcare Businesses (MHB), Leading high Performing Healthcare Organizations (LeHHO) and Bio-Entrepreneurship Program (BEP). Program participants will earn CPD points.

The institute will also host the Center for Innovation, Research and Advisory Services in Healthcare [CIRAS-Health], which has a database of faculty and high quality independent consultants in healthcare, and business leadership/management who are concerned with appropriate formative and summative research, the development and acquisition of innovation, Short-Medium Term Consultancy Support, and the provision of Advisory Services.
