Doing Business in China

Senior Management Leadership Program Module III held a joint class with Lagos Business School Alumni at Antai college of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai China. The module themed ‘Doing Business in China’ was held from the 10 – 14 September 2012.

The participants covered a wide range of topics such as Chinese culture and philosophy, China and the world competition, business law and practice, business environment of China’s economy, marketing and branding strategies in China and negotiation in doing business in China. The participants visited various successful companies to help them understand the Chinese markets as well as obtain unique perspectives of how businesses are run.

Company Visits

SAIC Motor Corporation Limited ‘SAIC Motor’, which is now the largest listed vehicle-making corporation on the Chinese A-share stock market. From January to June, automotive sales of the corporation hit a record high, which is the key reason for its steady growth of operating income. The corporation sold about 2.2million units of locally produced vehicles with a year-on-year growth of 11.4% which sustained their leadership market position in China.

Yiwu Small commodity market to appreciate how an economy can capitalise on the large scale sale of small commodities. Yiwu has built up more than 20 famous wholesale markets which spread all over the Yiwu city since 1982, when the first market was founded. They include Yiwu International Trade Market which is present in 5 Districts, with the main market being Futian market, Huangyuan market and Furniture market. Besides these markets, there are also some specialized commerce Street markets like zipper market, car accessories market, jewelry market and many more. The products of Yiwu market have won good reputation in the world because of their low price and high quality. In 2009, Yiwu commodities were exported to 189 countries and regions with the total export value of about 2.1billion U.S. dollars. Europe was Yiwu’s largest export area last year with an export value of 665,071,900 U.S. dollars which accounted for 31% of the total annual exports. The United States remains the largest export country of Yiwu.

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) one of the largest shipping companies in the world. As a worldwide logistics company, NYK Line now operates more than 800 ocean cargo ships including large container ships, car carriers and huge tankers, warehousing services and logistics, forwarders and consolidators, plus land and air transportation services.
