Leadership is both an innate quality and a cultivated skill, shaped by experiences and a willingness to grow. My personal journey in leadership began in 2010, when I took on the role of assistant administrator. In 2015, I transitioned into academia, joining the School of Management and Commerce as a graduate assistant. Since then, I have advanced through various administrative and academic roles, culminating in my current position as a lecturer at Strathmore University Business School (SBS). This progression represents not only my personal growth but also my unwavering commitment to fostering impactful education across Africa.
In 2018, the merger of SBS with the School of Management marked a pivotal moment under the visionary leadership of Prof. David Wangombe and Dr. George Njenga. Their transformative guidance reinforced my alignment with SBS’s mission: reshaping the business landscape through innovative teaching and ethical leadership. This mission mirrors my aspiration to empower future leaders who are equipped to drive positive change in their communities.
Throughout my time at SBS, I have contributed to several significant academic initiatives. These include developing curricula for the Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Science in Development Finance Programmes. These curricula were designed to tackle real-world challenges faced by African businesses, blending theoretical rigor with practical application. Witnessing students use their acquired knowledge to solve complex business problems has been a source of immense pride and has deepened my dedication to teaching and mentorship.
SBS’s influence extends across Africa, serving as a hub of excellence that inspires innovation and entrepreneurship among students and professionals. Whether through lectures or administrative roles, I have been privileged to contribute to this legacy.
The path to excellence has not been without its challenges. The dynamic nature of higher education in Africa demands adaptability, creativity, and resilience. Addressing issues such as resource constraints and the ever-evolving needs of curricula has shaped my understanding of effective leadership. True leaders, I have learned, must be proactive problem solvers, embracing change and inspiring others to do the same.
To future students and colleagues at SBS, I embrace curiosity and remain open-minded. Leadership is a continuous journey that requires dedication, collaboration, and an authentic desire to create a meaningful impact. Learning opportunities abound both inside and outside the classroom, and each one contributes to shaping your leadership journey.
As you embark on your paths, remember that your contributions can extend far beyond your immediate circles. Together, we can build a legacy of excellence and innovation at SBS and beyond, cultivating a new generation of leaders equipped to navigate the complexities of today’s world. Let us continue to inspire, lead, and transform Africa for the better.
