Last week, the Women Directors Leadership Programme (WDLP) participants converged at the scenic Sarova Shaba Game Lodge in Samburu for their final module, focusing on the crucial themes of innovation, effective crisis management, and enhancing boardroom dialogue.

Kicking off the session, Dr. John Olukuru led an insightful discussion on innovation, emphasizing the importance of data-driven decision-making in today’s fast-paced business environment. He highlighted how emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), are reshaping board governance and underscored the critical need for cyber and information security in protecting organizational assets.

Building on this foundation, day two saw Kellen Eileen Kariuki, a seasoned corporate governance executive and the Academic Lead of WDLP, facilitate engaging conversations around strategy. The sessions explored three key topics”

  • The Board’s Role in Strategy: Understanding how boards influence organizational direction.
  • Shaping Strategy: Identifying methods boards can employ to actively shape strategic initiatives.
  • Challenges in Strategy Formulation and Execution: Addressing common hurdles boards face in implementing effective strategies.

On day three, Dr. George Njenga, Founding Dean of Strathmore University Business School, tackled the sensitive topic of board vulnerabilities. His session delved into the dynamics of board disruption and crisis leadership, providing participants with practical insights on navigating unexpected challenges. Drawing from his extensive board-level experience, Dr. Njenga illuminated the complexities that boards encounter and offered strategies for effective crisis management.

WDLP aims to shift the narrative from simply advocating for women’s representation on boards to enhancing their performance and effectiveness in leadership roles. With a commitment to fostering excellence, the programme empowers women to navigate the intricacies of corporate governance with confidence and competence.
