Financial Services Roundtable: Empowering Tomorrow’s Financial Leaders

On 3rd November 2023, Strathmore University Business School (SBS) hosted the Financial Services Roundtable, an event aimed at preparing the Bachelor of Commerce students, undertaking the Finance and Accounting specializations for a career in the Financial Services sector.

Dr. David Mathuva, the Director, Undergraduate Programmes, SBS officially opened the event with welcome remarks where he emphasized the importance of sustainability, explaining that it involves the careful use of resources while protecting the environment and society. He further noted that sustainability encompasses three key dimensions: social, environmental, and economic. “These dimensions are closely interconnected and must be balanced to ensure a better future for our planet and its inhabitants,” Dr. Mathuva added.

Throughout the afternoon, the students had the opportunity to participate in group discussions

facilitated by professionals in various fields across the financial services sector. These discussions provided a platform for students to delve deeper into topics related to finance, investment, sustainability, and professional life. By engaging with experts and fellow students, they gained firsthand knowledge and insights, expanding their perspectives and exploring potential career paths.

These group discussions played a vital role in enhancing students understanding of the real-

world applications of their chosen fields and broadening their perspectives. The event was

marked by lively conversations, thought-provoking insights, and a shared commitment to

sustainability. The challenges and opportunities within the realm of energy supply and the various group discussions showcased the diverse areas of expertise and the immense potential for

growth and innovation.

The students had discussions in topical areas such as asset management, investment products, data science, public finance, tax, stock market operations, forensic accounting, corporate finance, financial markets, audit and assurance along with risk and assurance, climate finance and investment management.

The discussions provided a platform for in-depth exploration and exchange of ideas, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities within these areas while emphasizing the critical role that sustainability plays in shaping the future of financial services. By exploring and understanding these concepts, the students gained a comprehensive understanding of the financial landscape and developed the skills necessary to navigate and contribute to the field.
