On the 19th of April 2024, the Support departments of Strathmore University Business School (SBS) embarked on a meaningful journey to the Dorothea Rescue Center, situated in Tala, approximately 55 km from Strathmore University. Nestled amidst the serene surroundings of Tala, this haven serves as a beacon of hope for young girls who have found themselves on the harsh streets, offering them not just shelter but a chance at a better future.

Upon our arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by the initial impression. The center appeared clean, adorned with meticulously maintained lawns, and the girls were impeccably dressed, eagerly awaiting our arrival.

St. Dorothy, overseeing affairs that day, extended a warm welcome to the SBS team, attributing the order and cleanliness we observed to their association with Strathmore. She expressed admiration for the standards of tidiness and organization that reflected the ethos of Strathmore University. It was inspiring to discover that the center drew inspiration from Strathmore, striving to emulate the same values of dignity and respect within its premises.

The day unfolded with enriching activities that brought joy and purpose to all involved. Engaging with the children, working alongside farm managers, and lending a hand in preparing a nourishing lunch fostered a sense of connection and shared humanity. These moments of interaction underscored the importance of community and solidarity in uplifting those in need.

Dorothea Rescue Center, opened in 2021, is a sanctuary exclusively for girls rescued from the streets of Nairobi and its environs. Upon arrival, the girls are greeted with love and acceptance, a stark contrast to the harsh realities they have known. The center’s mission goes beyond providing basic needs; it is about restoring dignity, rebuilding lives, and nurturing dreams.

One of the most touching aspects of the center is its commitment to reintegration. Each girl is assessed individually, with efforts made to reunite them with their families whenever possible. For those without stable family structures, temporary foster homes offer a nurturing environment where they can thrive.

The journey from the streets to the sanctuary is not an easy one, as testified by two girls who bravely shared their stories. Their narratives highlighted the complex challenges they faced and the transformative power of love and support in their journey towards healing and renewal.

The community’s involvement is instrumental in the center’s success. Generous donations, including the land on which the center stands, reflect a shared commitment to creating a brighter future for vulnerable children. However, the need for ongoing support remains paramount, particularly in the realm of education. Scholarships, school uniforms, and stationery are essential for empowering these girls with the tools they need to succeed academically.

Counselors play a crucial role in the rehabilitation process, providing emotional support and guidance to help the girls navigate their past traumas and envision a hopeful future. The call for volunteer counselors underscores the ongoing need for dedicated individuals willing to lend their expertise and compassion to this noble cause.

As the day drew to a close, the SBS team departed with hearts full of gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose. The visit to Dorothea Rescue Center served as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of compassion and community in making a tangible difference in the lives of those most in need. Strathmore University’s partnership with the center embodies its commitment to social responsibility and holistic education, empowering future leaders to effect positive change in society.
