We ended the month of August on a high note as we officially signed a landmark collaboration agreement with the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), signaling a new era of joint research initiatives to tackle Africa’s most pressing challenges in agriculture, health, and technology. This partnership reflects a shared vision to leverage innovation and science for sustainable development on the continent and beyond.
The signing ceremony brought together leaders and researchers from both institutions, the ILRI team led by Prof. Appolonaire Djikeng, ILRI Director General, and the Strathmore University team, led by Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor, Strathmore University, for an engaging dialogue. The conversations featured a showcase from both organizations on the various research activities they are undertaking as well as exploration for potential areas of collaboration.
Dr. Betsy Muriithi-Ochieng from iLab Africa presented cutting-edge technology research projects currently underway, highlighting innovations that can potentially transform industries. Prof. Gilbert Kokwaro, representing the Institute of Healthcare Management at Strathmore University, provided insights into ongoing health research projects, outlining areas of partnership with ILRI to address emerging health challenges, such as one health, and strengthen research capacity in Africa. From the Strathmore Agrifood and Innovation Centre (SAFIC), Dr. Mujibi Denis showcased impactful research initiatives designed to transform food systems across the continent. These projects aim to enhance food security, promote climate-smart agriculture, and create sustainable solutions for farmers and agribusinesses.
Prof. Djikeng, on the other hand, gave the researchers from Strathmore University an overview of ILRI from its formation, locations where ILRI works, key research interests, as well as potential areas of collaboration. Prof. Djikeng also emphasized ILRI’s commitment to impact research noting,“ILRI is committed to carrying out research that makes a real difference, and this partnership will truly forge a new future for research in Africa.”
Dr. Vincent Ogutu, noted the timeliness and importance of the partnership: “I am excited about this partnership with ILRI, and I see many touch points where our two organizations can work together—from agriculture under SAFIC to health under the Institute of Management and technology through iLab.” He also touch
This partnership goes beyond a ceremonial agreement; it represents a commitment to co-creating actionable solutions that bridge research and practice. By combining resources, expertise, and networks, Strathmore University and ILRI are well-positioned to translate groundbreaking research into tangible results that will shape the future of Africa’s agrifood systems, health ecosystems, technology landscape and beyond.
As the collaboration takes shape, both institutions envision a future where research informs policy, drives innovation, and delivers solutions that empower communities and strengthen economies. This is a strategic step toward creating a resilient, sustainable, and prosperous Africa.
