This week, Strathmore University Business School trained 15 Safaricom PLC Board members in the Board Leadership and Governance Training Programme.
This Programme aimed to equip the participants on trending boardroom issues and directorship matters. Moreover, it provided a lively interactive forum for genuine learning by looking at emerging trends in the boardroom, exploring the different board skills required to better lead the board along with the various practices and principles needed for effective boards. It further gave the directors a platform to discuss key issues and examine differing perspectives on current topics related to directorship and corporate governance.
The Board of Directors is a critical instrument of corporate governance and plays a key role in economic development in all sectors. Research shows that the board effectiveness is dependent on a variety of factors: the orientation of new board members, procedures for board training and development, boardroom discussion and participation, formal board member appraisal, remuneration of board members and timeliness in making decisions.
Ideally, a board should comprise good ethical leaders who are mentally aggressive, value time, are intrinsically motivated and open to regular evaluation as a tool for improvement.
