Practical AI Application in Digital Lending

The digital lending landscape is rapidly evolving, driven by emerging technologies and changing customer expectations. Financial institutions must leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance customer experience, streamline credit assessment, and improve debt collection processes to stay ahead.

Last month, we trained Safaricom’s Credit and Finance teams in a Customized Programme dubbed the Practical AI Application in Digital Lending Programme. The Programme, tailor-made for Safaricom Plc, aimed to equip the credit and finance teams with the requisite skills to enhance credit assessment, customer experience, and debt collection using AI.

The Programme covered an array of topics, including an introduction to digital lending, data analytics in lending, debt collection analytic dashboards, and ethical debt collection.

The first session focused on Introduction to Digital Lending, exploring its evolution, global trends, and industry benchmarks. Participants gained insights into how AI reshapes the worldwide lending ecosystem, from traditional banking models to modern fintech innovations. Another core topic was AI in digital lending, particularly customer segmentation and journey mapping. This session showed the participants how lenders can personalize lending experiences through AI-driven analytics, ensuring seamless customer interactions. The session also covered Journey Net Promoter Score (JNPS)—a crucial metric for assessing digital lending customer satisfaction.

Participants explored how AI can analyze vast data points, including financial behaviors and alternative creditworthiness indicators, to make smarter lending decisions.

Credit risk management is a critical component of digital lending, so the Programme also delved into AI-powered credit scoring models. These models leverage machine learning to assess creditworthiness more accurately and inclusively, enabling financial institutions to extend credit to underserved populations.
