Last week, students undertaking the BSc Supply Chain and Operations Management Programme at Strathmore University Business School (SBS) visited the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDs) with the aim to give them exposure on the working of healthcare supply chains.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to observe firsthand how MEDs handles the procurement of drugs and manages its warehouse. Further, interacting with Dr. Kigen, the Head of Procurement, and the Warehouse Managers allowed the students to gain insights into the procurement processes and learn about the challenges and strategies used to maintain business operations, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This kind of exposure to real-life scenarios is invaluable for the students as it enables them to see how theoretical concepts are applied in a practical setting.

The second part of the visit, where the students were taken around to see how warehouse operations work and even got to explore a unique laboratory, further enriched their understanding of supply chain management. This hands-on experience allows the students to connect what they have learned in class with the actual industry practices, bridging the gap between theory and real-world application.

The BSc. Supply Chain and Operations Management Programme integrates supply chain, logistics, operations and digitization. Special emphasis is placed on production, logistics, big data, blockchain, automation and Artificial Intelligence, and delves into how they will impact supply chain and operations management in the near and far future.
