Last month, 36 students undertaking their Bachelor of Commerce Programme at Strathmore University undertook a business trip to China with the aim to expose the students to the business culture and practices in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The students, currently in their fourth year of study, represented a diverse mix of nationalities including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, DRC Congo, and the USA.
The trip begun with a visit to the prestigious Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), known for its academic excellence and beautiful campus. Students explored modern facilities, attended a lecture on the Hong Kong and Kenyan economies, and gained insights into student life and campus culture. The day ended with a panoramic city tour and a memorable dinner cruise along Victoria Harbour.
The itinerary then shifted to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, where students experienced a dynamic city tour, witnessing rapid development and innovation. In Guangzhou, the students delved deeper into the local culture through a guided city tour, exploring historical sites and traditional customs. They also visited Guangzhou’s Electronics Market, Leather Products Market, Beauty and Cosmetics Market, and African Cana Market. This allowed students to observe diverse products, engage with suppliers, and establish contacts with manufacturers interested in international expansion.
The students also attended an international trade session at Junluxe Hotel led by an expert from United Oceans Logistics. The students then visited Yakult and GAC Motor factories, providing firsthand exposure to manufacturing processes and corporate operations in China.
This business trip provided the BCom students with a unique blend of academic learning, cultural immersion, and professional networking opportunities. The experiences gained during this trip will undoubtedly enrich their educational journey and professional development.
