An African Immersion: Undergraduate Students from New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi, Visit Strathmore University

Last week we hosted a group of undergraduate students from New York University, Abu Dhabi for a week-long visit which featured a rich exploration of academia, research, and impactful discussion with local industry leaders.

During the visit, the students had an opportunity to learn more about Strathmore University’s opportunity to learn about the university’s ethos, educational initiatives, and research centers, gaining insights into its innovative approach to academic excellence.

The visit provided a unique chance for the NYU Abu Dhabi students to interact with Strathmore’s esteemed faculty members. These exchanges went beyond the traditional classroom setting, fostering an environment of shared knowledge and intellectual exploration.

The visit culminated in a panel session on waste management for the global environment which featured distinguished panelists such as; Dr. Damaris Mbui, a Senior Faculty Member at the University of Nairobi, Department of Chemistry, Elisha Bwatuti, the Program Manager, USAID Strategic Partnerships Program, Alfred Gathogo, a faculty member at Strathmore University Business School, and Cliff Nyakundi, Africa Regional Manager, Hultz
Prize Foundation.

The panelists brought diverse perspectives, expertise, and real-world experiences to the discussion on addressing global waste management challenges. Dr. Damaris Mbui shared insights from the academic realm, shedding light on the scientific aspects of waste management. Elisha Bwatuti provided a valuable perspective from the USAID Strategic Partnerships Program, emphasizing the role of strategic collaborations with SMEs in addressing environmental concerns. Alfred Gathogo contributed insights on how businesses can bridge the gap between business strategies and sustainable waste management practices. Cliff Nyakundi, representing the Hult Prize Foundation, offered a glimpse into the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in finding solutions for global challenges.

The panel session not only stimulated thought-provoking discussions but also encouraged an exchange of ideas and potential collaborations between the students and the distinguished panelists. It was an opportunity for the visiting students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical insights, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling complex global issues.
