SBS@20 Milestones Timeline

2005: The Birth of Strathmore University Business School (SBS)
Established as part of Strathmore University, SBS was founded with a singular vision: To Develop Ethical Leaders for Africa. From the beginning, SBS aimed to provide executives with an education rooted in academic rigor and practical, ethical, and transformative skills to lead in a complex world.

2006: Launch of Executive Education and Global Partnerships
SBS introduced Executive Education programmes, tailored for professionals, aimed at addressing local challenges with globally informed perspectives.

2007: Launch of the Flagship MBA for Executives Programme
SBS launched its flagship MBA for Executives programme, quickly recognized for its use of the case method, with a focus on leadership, strategy, and general management skills.

2008: Award of Charter to Strathmore University
On April 23, 2008, His Excellency Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya granted a Charter to Strathmore University. This further established its reputation and commitment to high standards of academic excellence.

2011: Expansion to East Africa
SBS began expanding its presence across East Africa by establishing a regional office in Uganda. This enabled the business school to reach more professionals and leaders, furthering its mission to impact leadership across Africa.

2012: Opening of the SBS Green Building
SBS inaugurated its new building, which was awarded “Best Green Building Development in Africa” by the African Real Estate and Housing Finance (AREHF) Academy Awards in March 2012.

2017: Merger between SBS and the School of Management and Commerce (SMC)
Through a merger between SBS and the Strathmore School of Management and Commerce (SMC), the integrated school boasted a portfolio that includes undergraduate programmes, more postgraduate and executive programmes.

2018: Launch of the PhD in Business and Management Programme
SBS introduced a PhD programme in Business and Management, expanding its academic offerings and establishing itself as a hub for advanced research and academic excellence in Africa.

2020: Resilience and Innovation during the COVID-19 Pandemic
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, SBS demonstrated resilience by seamlessly transitioning to online learning and providing timely, relevant knowledge through webinars.

2022: Leadership Transition – Spearheading Africa’s Transformation
Dr. George Njenga, the Founding Dean of SBS, officially concluded his tenure as the Executive Dean. During the interim period, Dr. Angela Ndunge provided steadfast guidance until Dr. Caesar Mwangi’s appointment on December 1, 2022.

2023: Leading in Research and Innovation
SBS has established itself as a thought leader in research, critical to Africa's future, focusing on areas such as sustainability, governance, entrepreneurship, healthcare, policy and digital transformation.

2025: Celebrating 20 Years and Looking Forward
As SBS steps into its third decade, it continues its mission of developing ethical and transformational leaders for Africa. Looking ahead, SBS remains dedicated to preparing leaders equipped to navigate the continent’s evolving challenges with integrity, creativity, and a commitment to service.
