Gertrude Wamala Karugaba

Gertrude heads the Corporate and Commercial Practice at Sebalu & Lule Advocates and is ranked as a leading lawyer in Uganda by Chambers and Partners Global Guide to the World’s Leading Lawyers.

Her experience, gained as in-house counsel at Stanbic Bank (2004-2013) and as a partner at Sebalu & Lule spans project finance, banking and financial law, capital markets, corporate governance, M&A and regulatory support.

She acts for local and international financial institutions as well as large corporates, some of which are listed on regional stock exchanges, on a variety of legal, regulatory, compliance and transactional mandates.

She is a financial sector expert and a technology enthusiast who often speaks publicly on matters of interest to financial sector participants.

She is a member of the Uganda Law Society Rule of Law Advisory Panel and a member of the East African Law Society.

Gertrude holds a Master of Law of the University of Cambridge (Queens College), a Bachelor of Laws of Makerere University and has undertaken several executive leadership training programs within the region and in South Africa.

She chairs the boards of Financial Sector Deepening Uganda, League of East African Directors and the Centenary Bank Staff Defined Contribution Scheme.

She is a member of the boards of KCB Bank Uganda, FountainGate Advisory and Strathmore Research and Consulting Company (Advisory Board member).
